Are you guilty of these common skincare mistakes?

We all want our skin to look fabulous every single day. We may even think that we are taking the best possible care of our skin, yet so many of us are guilty of some obvious skincare mistakes. Are you guilty of any of the following?

Not washing your makeup off before bed.

We’ve all been there. It’s late, we’re lying in bed feeling very sleepy and it can be easy to let the sleep overcome us. Do not do this! If you don’t wash your face when you go to sleep at night, you are going to wake up with clogged pores and a congested, dull complexion. You wouldn’t go to sleep without brushing your teeth so while you are in the bathroom brushing your teeth anyway, just quickly splash your face with some water, grab the cleanser and give your face a clean, removing all that pore-clogging makeup. I know, I know, once you splash your face with water it wakes you up a bit but make sure the water is warm and once you are in a routine it can be hard to actually go to sleep without washing your face!

Using a cleanser that’s too harsh for your skin.

Using the wrong cleanser for your skin type can cause dryness, breakouts and strip skin of its natural oils. If your skin starts to feel dry or tight after washing your face, your cleanser might be too harsh for your skin type. Switch to something a bit gentler and see how you get on. Remember, don’t exfoliate too much. Two to three times a week should be sufficient enough to ensure you have a radiant, glowing complexion.

Using too much product.

Sometimes, especially if you are suffering from problem skin, you might feel like the more you put on your face, the better. This is not true and can actually cause more harm than good. When using a cleanser, use only a small pea sized amount. Lather between the palms of your hands and apply to your face. Using too much can dry out your skin and make it feel tight. When using a treatment or a moisturiser, follow the instructions and use the directed amount. Use too much and you can end up with clogged pores and breakouts. Using products with a two in one functionality, such as a moisturiser with sun protection, means you don’t need to layer product after product onto your skin. It’s also great value for money!

Using hot water instead of warm.

It can be so tempting to have a nice hot shower or a long hot bath, especially in winter when it’s cold outside. This unfortunately will dry out your skin. Have a warm shower or bath instead and make sure you moisturise afterwards. Your skin will thank you!

Ignoring your neck and chest.

Our chest, neck and hands can be such a giveaway to our age yet we all tend to forget these areas and concentrate on our faces. The skin on your neck and chest is much thinner than the skin on your face, and yet often it gets just as much sun exposure. Ignore these areas and you’ll likely see sun damage showing up as blotchy skin, broken capillaries, and dry patches. Next time you are taking care of your face, ensure you apply the same care to your hands, neck and chest!

Not wearing sun cream every day.

We all know the importance of wearing sun cream in the summer, especially if we know we will be out in it all day. However when the sun is hiding, we tend to forget that UVA rays are just as strong all year round. Wear sun cream even when it’s dull out to keep your skin looking young and healthy and don’t forget to reapply regularly!
